The Egyptian (1954), Edmund Purdom, Gene Tierney

Video Description:
The Egyptian (1954), Edmund Purdom, Bella Darvi
with Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, Gene Tierney
This segment: Scenes with Gene Tierney.
This is very loosely based on The Story of Sinuhe, which does include references to Aten but was written many centuries before the 18th
dynasty.
Sets, costumes, and props from this film were bought and re-used by Cecil B. DeMille for The Ten Commandments. As the events in that story take place seventy years after those in The Egyptian, this re-use creates an unintended sense of continuity. The commentary track on the Ten Commandments DVD points out many of these re-uses. Only two actors, Mimi Gibson and John Carradine, and a handful of extras, appeared in both pictures.
The Prince Aly Khan was a consultant during filming, he was engaged to Gene Tierney.

Was it an epic? I thought the overlayed text stating the events took place about 1300 years before Jesus was an apology for incest in the plot which, of course, went on a lot.

It was an epic but it was not a blockbuster. In this account, Sinhue is only the half-brother I believe and not directly related. In the movie this relationship is never consummated for various reasons as Sinhue is in love with a servant girl played by Jean Simmons. It's a while since I watched the whole thing but I think this is correct. But you are right in general historically about this.

Easily a great movie
Definately under-rated
A classic epic
Ustinov is great in this movie
Victor Mature does his job,
And Tierney cold and brilliant
Set in Epypt in a true historical period
Culminating in a mexican stand-off style poisoning scene.
This is one of my favorite ever movies
sadly very hard to find.
Put more clips on
The whole movie if you have to
It's worth it

This film must have been a bit heavy for American audiences of 1954. BTW, I guessed correctly that Bernard Herrman had a hand in the music, but was surprised to learn that Alfred Newman is listed, too. Any insights?

Can barely remember seeing this. But dialogue seems super sharp. I do know Herrmann composed score. If you could put on title music, please...

Alfred Newman was scoring a very long movie in a short time-frame, and being appreciative of Bernard Herrman's capabilites, he tapped him to compose some of the cues for the film. Herrmann ended up scoring a little over half the film ...

I agree with the earlier comments. this is a way underrated movie. 20th hasn't even got it out in letterbox format. I wish they would. Like most of the 1950's "big" ones, this one uses the whole wide screen.

Also, it gives some color and texture to the Egyptian which we miss when all we see are theit hiroglyphics. The book is a great read, as are all of Waltari's books, but somewhat different as a substantial part of it relates to his travels as well as the period of Ahkenaten's rule. This movie comes from Zanuck's heyday at Fox and is a good one.

Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech, is touted as among the greatest speeches of all time. Yes, it may well be - but it appears "paraphrased" almost verbatim from the Egyptian." Edmund Purdum's beautiful soul stirring speech for the ages is delivered in the closing scenes of the movie, with such Shakespearian eloquence, that it's no wonder the eclectic MLK appropriated it as his own. bruce235001, if you have that scene please post it on YouTube.

This movie is really under rated and rarely played even here in Finland, though the book "Sinuhe The Egyptian" is well known because of the Finnish writer Mika Waltari.
