It was invented in Africa. It further developed in the states though. Actually the 5 string version might have originated in the states but idk for sure.

Thanks mate, traditional Aussie music consists of mainly acoustic guitar and violin (with maybe a little yodelling).
The banjo is a missing element.

That's "Uncle" Josh Graves on the dobro. I saw these guys with this particular band 3 times in person: Grand Ole Opry, Monterrey, TN, and Loyola University in New Orleans. Just fantastic entertainment. Earl is the 5 string king!

Hi Zeldafoo9. You might not have heard of Earl Scruggs, but you sure can pick out a talented banjo player. Awesome that you noticed. Most of us pickers were influenced by Earl's playing. He developed the style played in bluegrass music today and it's named after him, "Scrugg's Style". We heard it for the first time and went crazy. Most banjo players remain crazy, but what a way to go. :o) Pick up a banjo and join us. It's really fun.

hahaha i wish i could be a crazy banjo player myself. i started listiining to bluegrass about 3 years ago and im 18 now. the banjo really intrigues me. although still listen to Wu Tang and whatnot i looove bluegrass.

Hey Drunkenmathematics. You CAN be a crazy banjo player. You only need to buy a banjo and start practicing. You can't be a banjo player without being crazy, but you can be crazy without being a banjo player...LOL.
