To each his own, but you're a dolt. Howlin' Wolf was a one of a kind performer that has had people inspired by his work since he laid it down. You should just Go listen to SRV, and leave the REAL stuff to REAL blues fans. fool.
By the way, TARD, ... ( 1 month ago by ppmattpp)
By the way, TARD, the 12 bar format IS the blues, Einstein. There are 8 bar variations, and some other forms, but the 12 bar 'plain jane' arrangement you are dissing the Wolf for, is what blues is about. Shows you are an 'accidental' blues listener. How you can mention Muddy, and Skip James, and think Chester is anthing but a LEGEND, is beyond me. ANYONE can be creative with 265 chords, but try it with just 3. The Wolf reinvented the 12 bar blues on practically every song. =

ppmattpp. I am a real blues fan. Your need to insult shows me that you are not a blues fan but only a music retard, and a moron. Comment on what I said to or just go fuck yourself. Then, go search Robert Johnson. It will take some time, but when it soaks in, if you give it a chance, then come back here and listen to this generic 12 bar blues crap. Yes, it did influence, because this is right about the time back beat became introduced into music using a snare drum. Moron.
Blues, is not about ... ( 1 month ago by YouSpamTard)
Blues, is not about 12 bars. Blues is about cotton pickers in the field pickin de cotton with shredded arms and hand from the thor cotton bush. They hollered their pain to each other with any musical instruments what so ever. Enter the diddly bow and eventually some guitars. Yes, Johnson did play 12 bars, but he did wisted and twisted to disguise the typical, predictable 12 bar chord change, in time crap you hear from wolf.

SpamTard. So you've researched the blues, but 12 bar blues is crap? Anyone out there want to respond to that reTARDed notion? If 12 bar blues bores you, you're not really into the blues. No big deal, but you are missing alot of classic TRADITIONAL blues if all you look for is someone that can basterdize it by changing the structure. Once again, EASY to be creative in music if you make up up the rules as you go. Being original and creative with 3 chords and 12 bars is what makes Wolf a master.

By the way, nice spelling TARD.
Ppm moron, I SAID! ... ( 1 month ago by YouSpamTard)
Ppm moron, I SAID! that when the 12 bars are predictable, they are boring. It is a simple thing to understand. Now, you say that if it is not "TRADITIONAL blues" it is "basterdize", (on a side note, check your spelling yourself you self-righteous prick) then you are saying that Johnson, the master of all is stupid for his manipulation of 12 bars. Is that what you are saying, nobody should leave predictable 12 bar chord change, in time crap? I think that is what you are saying. Sheesh!

i saw hubert sumlin (lead guitarist here) a few years ago at the Mount Baker Blues Fest. I was onyl 17 and just getting into the blues and I wish I could see him again now, then I didn't really have the eyes. Anyway, to the dudes arguing 12 bar basics and lack of creativity - the blues isnt ABOUT anything. Its rooted in MANY things, be it a couple strings on a wall, or rhinestoned john lee hooker in 1995. enjoy the soul of it. sounds cheesy but its why we whites dig it. they express what we feel
what we feel, and ... ( 1 month ago by chantsdumort)
what we feel, and they feel of course. but we cant express it in that way. the blues (from these black men born 1900's - maybe 1940-50s can express loss, happiness, depression.. whatever better than anybody in some of these songs.
dont get hung up on the bullshit.
anyways, hubert sumlin is the only guy ive ever ehard that makes a guitar sound like a dripping fuacet. hes modest in his playing too... its so great seeing the dynamic between them. i love the blues so much

i'm disappointed to see Blues fans miss the point of this song. its not about 12 bar or any kind of particular groove even. these guys were just havin a good time after a long day of hard work. you know plenty about playin guitar, but i think its time to learn about living life.......something howlin wolf knows plenty about ;)
Play on

I think you guys miss the biggest point. Most music from black people is designed as party music. This is the 50's equivelent to a modern club song. 12 bar 4/4 time is great for dancing it gives the song a natural beat. Now not to say that there aren't great slow grooves in the blues as we all know, but this music was played at jukes where people were dancing not sitting. We black folks don't go to a party to sit, even today.

Howlin' Wolf was 300 lbs. of pure joy. He was Mr. Blues. He was one of the most inluential blues artist of his era. The Rollingstones idolized the Wolf. Howlin' Wolf was a hurricane, tornado, and a earthquake. You knew there was going to be an explosion when he performed. I was mesmerized by his power and showmanship. Sam Phillips (Owner of Sun Records) said Howlin' Wolf was the greatest artist he ever recorded. That says a lot, since he had recorded Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.
