Women and girls are the most impoverished, most discriminated-against group on earth. Of the 1.3 billion people living in absolute poverty worldwide, 70% are women and girls. Women work two-thirds of the world's working hours, but earn only 10 percent of its income. They produce half the world's food, but own only 1% of its land. And when it comes to literacy, two-thirds of the world's 900 illiterate adults are women. CARE is committed to Millennium Development Goal #3 because empowering women and creating gender equality is the way to bring about lasting change against global poverty. Every single Millennium Development goal is directly related to women's rights. Until the world gets this right, none of the other goals can be met.

In fact, that kidnapping and beheading was horrendous. They paraded her (wouldn't be any less horrible if she had been a man...)in front of cameras, made her beg for her life, and then murdered her anyway. Her headless body was found thrown in the street. Could have been a man or a woman. But again, CARE's people have even shed blood (more than just this one person) to help people, men and women. I am just glad we are not fighting, and seem to understand each other better...

That really is terrible. As you say, regardless of sex - death is death, and to be tortured and humiliated in such a way is just dispicable. This kind of shi..stuff boils my blood :(

I know, men and women get beheaded...this is ONE of the countries CARE has tried to help. They had her (could have been a man) on the news for over a week-I can't recall her name right now(I hate myself for that!)but will find out and let you know.I think it was Margaret Hussein (she was married to an Iraqi man-she was British).Anyhow,I am just as angered when a man is murdered. CARE's people really work on the front lines.

I wanted to fill you in on more details regarding Margaret.The terrorists who kidnapped her in broad daylight held her hostage, and demanded that the U.K. pull their troops out of Iraq for her release. She was on the national news many times, begging for her life-of course, the U.K. could not pull out because of that. It is a shame, because she(and many others, men included) have given their lives on behalf of CARE, to help others(men and women). They had to pull out of Iraq. Good night...

Sorry, I just looked her up--her name was Margaret Hassan. Google her name and you will find her (even under Hussein...). They have her photo, news footage, story, etc... It is a tragedy when people suffer--men and women. But I won't be able to sleep well tonight knowing just what a great organization CARE is, with such dedicated men and women working there (for low wages, I might add-it is a charity...), unless I proclaim one last time that they are good people, and don't leave anyone out.

Yeah, we covered this already below...no problem. Indeed, CARE was/has been there, on many occasions... Rwanda, Iraq, Somalia, etc...They are not feminists. This is just one particular platform/campaign of theirs. Picture it this way, just because someone wants to "save the whales," does not mean they don't want to save the polar bears, manatees, etc... You are a good person--there is no issue here anymore. I should have been more clear early on with my explanations... Have a great day.

CORRECTION:I apologize for mis-posting! After re-reading the old news stories, I found that Margaret was not murdered by beheading-she was shot in the head on camera, then mutilated.Her body was found thereafter. Whatever the case, murder is murder.Margarete's last platform/campaign had nothing to do with sexism.She was focused on a clinic that tended to children with spinal injuries and malformations.I hope at this point, that nobody would say CARE hates adults because of a childrens' clinic?

CARE also does work in Haiti, ElSalvador, you name it. If it is a "lesser developed country" (aka third world), CARE is (or has been) there, helping in any capacity possible. This is the first time they have ever had a platform focused on womens' rights.And they continue their other work as well. Again, they help men, women, and children. Having one platform/campaign does not mean they are sexist, racist, etc. What a slippery slope it would be to say different.

For instance, supporting children does not mean you hate adults. Supporting people in Africa does not mean you hate South Americans (CARE supports both, and more...). Supporting men does not mean you hate women. Supporting women does not mean you hate men. It is not feminist...please read the other postings. Seriously, just because you have a specific campaign to deal with a particular issue, does NOT mean you are excluding others. CARE has been on the front lines, defending men, women and children, since WWII. Just because you join a group wanting to help save the whales or something, does not mean you are against saving the manatees, polar bears, etc... I know it might be a poor analogy, but you get the point. Care has other campaigns too...

I am not sorry to tell you that I firmly believe that your reasoning is flawed. I respect your opinion; however, there is no way that any reasonable person is going to believe that by supporting one cause, means you are against all others.
Of course, if we were talking about a war, and you took one side, then of course, you would be against the other. But this is simply and entirely different scenario.
