I don't understand your question. How would responsible Americans be paying for idiotic ones with what I have suggested? I guess I can see how you'd make that argument but the truth is, with the current proposal, Americans will be paying regardless. I'd rather have my taxes raised but have my debts and mortgages paid off then to have my taxes raised and have greedy bankers and investors get all the money. The lesser of two evils.

and not all those who r facing foreclosure r idiotic Americans that lived beyond their means. Many r ppl who were duped & lied 2 by banks and mortgage companies who sold them AR loans. Granted, if they would have really read them & realized what they were getting themselves into, it might have dettered them from those loans. But most were made empty promises that they could refinance once their Adjustable Rate took effect. Now, obviously, because of this mess, most of those refis r not possible.

Biden in the VP Debate mentioned that they might be giving money to homeowners to pay off their mortgages. That is basically taking money out of my pocket and paying other people for their bad decisions.

1st of all, don't believe everything u hear in a debate. But there's no doubt that this financial bailout plan will be coming out of our pockets. Period. Whether it goes to homeowners to pay off their mortgages or whether it goes directly to banks here and overseas and to money hungry corporatations that sold this terrible loans in the 1st place. WE WILL BE PAYING FOR THIS. I would just rather see the $ go to help average Joe than to go to Corporate America Wall Street Junkies to feed the greed.

If a candidate tells you that they will do "x" they are either speaking the truth or they are a liar. Is Biden a liar? No? Then he is taking my money to buy irresponsible people homes... I didn't buy a home because I realized that it was irresponsible, now I am going to be punished.
I know we will be paying for this. I would rather pay for it of my own decision rather than have the government take it from me by force.

i agree with you re deceptive accounting practices in government. i know clinton surpluses weren't some "shangri-la" - just as i know bush & co fudge their numbers quite a bit. but presidents DO have a great deal of power over the economy -- much of the laws enacted by an the executive have to do with the distribution of wealth. the president also sets certain agendas with his party, asks for legislation (like bush tax cuts or "reaganomics"), and has veto power when he's not in agreement.

Again, INFLUENCE is not POWER. They can make all the changes they want, but if you and I do not spend, the economy stays in the gutter.
Did you ever take a micro or macro economics class? If you did, you would know that 70% of the economy is consumer confidence. Almost 3/4 of the whole situation is out of the Government's hands.
Congress just spent $700 billion dollars, and the Dow took another dump. That is power?

The worse part is that the housing market was overly inflated, and the main push behind the $700 billion was to keep people from losing value in their homes. WHY? Let the housing come back to affordability. So you lose some value for a while...it will come back.
This bailout was the most insane thing they could have done. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) said we needed a workout, not a bailout, using private money. He voted no.

You did not mention the more dangerous Biden mention during he debate: He wants to give judges the power to change the principle of the mortgage. Let's try to comprehend this for a moment. If I paid $400K for a house, a judge can say, you now only owe $200K. They want to let judges can decide what you owe.

Yeah so much influence, that they said no the first time. If congress did not want this to pass, it wouldn't have, no matter what George said.
We get fooled by terms we do not understand and promises they can't keep. People buy into the idea that a President has all this power, but they really don't, and the congress gets away with just about anything.
