Our high school band director somehow managed to hire Phil Woods for a clinic and concert with the stage band in '79. This was not long after his solo on Billy Joel's 'Just the Way You Are', and for many saxophonists he was a god. I played drums behind him then but it was like he didn't need any backup - his power, swing and technique blew everyone away!

This was done in the studios of the NDR radio on May 31st 1968. Personnel is Woods and Konitz altos, Gato Barbieri (!) tenor, Slide Hampton, trb. Ack van Rooyen, trpt Jimmy Owens (flgl.),Volker Kriegel (gtr.) Joachim Kuhn (pno), Gunther Lenz bass, not sure of drummer, maybe Ralf Hubner. Two more pieces were broadcast on internet on August 23. This Way Up (by Owens) and Konitz's transcription of Armonstrong's chorus of Strutting with some Barbecue. If Selmer 54 has them...

I am pretty sure this tune is called 'And when we were young', as per the response of youroninfive. it was recorded around that time by Woods and his European Rhythm Machine for Pathe in France. Was reiussed once on LP, don't know if it has resurfaced on CD. Anyone know?
