Are you kidding me?
If this Aikidoka were able to really pull off such awesome anti-grip techniques he would be a millionare teaching international Judoka how to do such techniques.
But guess what, that video does not display a Judoka or another grappler vs a Aikidoka, its BS among other BS in this video.

I may have come a bit harsh but this is towards the people who think Aikido can really be this effective against Judo, its just not possible.
Also I respect Tohei Sensei, and also acknowledge that Tohei has a high Dan rank in Judo itself. The video even displays a chokehold which Aikido does not teach.
Tohei's still a ... ( 7 months ago by xonovik)
Tohei's still a 10th dan. That video was shot a long time ago, and was working on a completely simple concept. If it were anything more than what was done there, you'd see something completely different.
If you ever read and research Jigoro Kano's visits to Ueshiba's schools, it has been quoted several times that Aikido resembles the true Judo he had envisioned.
btw, I only noticed people getting injured in Judo ever since it became a sport. So many things "not" gentle about the sport of Judo.

I work at a Judo/BJJ school and have rolled with them before, but practice Tohei's Aikido. I'd have to say, although not consistently, but with little Judo/BJJ training, I've never been choked or arm barred successfully by any of them, instructors included and have won a few rounds playing by their rules, despite them having easily 3-4 times more stamina than I do. So the effectiveness in my opinion is there, if I didn't have those rules to follow, I'd treat it very differently.

Sounds like you can be some kind of world champion with the way you describe it.
Ever think of going to the Pan Ams or ADCC?

Aikido is part of a lifestyle that I include in my life, but not my way of life. I'm a dance instructor. I just happen to have the opportunity to test it out on many situations.

So after 40 years of training this 10th dan Aikido master is able to handle someone with very little training? What a waste of time and training. This video may convince students without a brain. Those who are intelligent will seek instruction elsewhere. What would be convincing is to him go against see a judo champion or better yet an Olympic class wrestler. I've been practicing martial arts for over 25 years and this video is just for entertainment purposes. A good laugh.
I just watched it a ... ( 3 months ago by taiji2310)
I just watched it a second time especially segment 1:04-1:13. Tohei Sensei used a lot of force and physical strength to throw an absolute beginner. Wow! I thought Aikido was about using ki and not muscular force. I guess when Aikido is put to the test, even against a beginner, using muscular force and physical strength to throw is sometimes a necessity.
Third viewing here. ... ( 3 months ago by taiji2310)
Third viewing here. Segments 0:20-0:30, Tohei is using a lot of muscular force to defend himself against a beginner. Tohei Sensei is using muscular force to counter muscular force, lost his balance and fell to the ground. In segment 0:32-0:33, Tohei Sensei uses a jiu-jitsu wrist lock to throw Herman. Look at the amount of muscular force he put in that one. Wow! Truly impressed with the softness.
I agree with people ... ( 3 months ago by Obiwan421)
I agree with people saying you do have to look for the fact that this is a japanese guy fighting with a "guest". No hard wrist lock or anything that could damage the guest could obviously be performed here. That's simply not a fight, and this guy is supposed to preach for non-violence.
Still, Tohei is supposedly famous for his "Ki" mastering, being able to stand still against someone trying to push him as hard as he can. Obviously that video proves this mastering is plain BS.
I can't find a ... ( 3 months ago by LMJohnson)
I can't find a reference, but I remember reading about an incident like this where Tohei performed badly against a larger but unskilled opponent. Ueshiba sensei was apparently furious and Tohei was not too pleased either so he decided to rethink his training. Apparently by the time he started touring the USA he had improved a lot and never had such a problem again.
There are stories ... ( 3 months ago by LMJohnson)
There are stories of various aikido sensei who used to go out and get involved in real world fights for the fun or just because they liked a drink and got into trouble! I am curious if there are stories of Tohei doing this? Perhaps he was too much mister nice guy and never got in trouble. That sort of real world "testing" is what would take dojo technique and make it real technique. Just a thought. Anybody have links?
When he started ... ( 2 months ago by taiji2310)
When he started touring the USA, he stopped taking challengers. Issue resolved. No more embarassment. If he was able to resolve his technical skill successfully, we would actually see videos of that.
I don't see how ... ( 2 months ago by kobekkobe)
I don't see how anyone could think that this little show represents anything about aikido other than a bit of balance stuff... there was no attack and as such, no techniques allowed. If Tohei had been allowed to see those grappling hands as potential strikes it would have been over instantly
If there was no ... ( 1 month ago by taiji2310)
If there was no attack, then why did Tohei have to defend himself?

When I took Aikido, none of the Aikido people could defend against my attacks. I was then told not to do that. I was then told to attack in a certain way (much like an idiot) and then the Aikido technique worked perfectly.
