apart from the les paul and marshall, this tone comes mainly from his fingers and overall technique (vibrato, phrasing, pick attack etc).

I think I'm right in saying that there are a lot of 'guitar gods' around past and present, that have awesome ability, technique, tone, speed, clarity etc. All of which, after a (long!!) while, can be learned. However, very few are able to talk through their instrument like Gary, and are able to do it with such raw passion.
One of the all time greats, and any one who doubts this, just listen to this one again...

A Marshall valve amp, he uses JCM800s these days I think, a Marshall Guv'nor, which are awesome, and a Les Paul with some decent PAF style pickups, my favs are Bareknuckles, but some prefer Dimarzios or Seymour Duncans, to name a few.

I first heard this when stayin at friends-My mate put it on in the lounge turned up loud of course! and I was asleep in the room above and it was 5am ! Loved it ever since I first had it as a wake up call!
