Well many would disagree with you. For those who found the Hannibal Rising disappointing most have credited the actor who played young Hannibal (Gaspard Ulliel) for an amazing performance and even the only bright spot to look forward to. Of course he ain't no Anthony Hopkins buddy but he had that penetrating, haunting charisma. Many liked his performance.

Yeah, there are some pretty nasty parts, but the real scary part is Hannibal himself. Gaspard does such a good job at portraying this haunted, vengeance-driven antihero, and his descent into real insanity stays with you long after the movie's over...

He was no Sir Tony, but he was a decent choice for the part. I just had an issue with the French accent that he has in this movie, while Sir Tony portrayed him with a welsh/ American accent. I found it rather distracting, oh well, I guess I'm just picky :)

The issue with this Hannibal Lecter as opposed to the one that Hopkins portrayed is that this one enjoys killing, while Hopkins's Lecter has no emotion when he kills. If he did have emotion, then he would be a sociopath (Ulliel's is a sociopath); Hopkins's is not a sociopath because he doesn't enjoy killing, he just does it to do it. That was a distracting inconsistency.

I know, but Thomas Harris emphasized that Lecter had no known psychological condition (when he wrote Red Dragon). He made sure that point was clear, and in this one..... it's like he forgot that he even wrote Red Dragon.
