hlodevico, by your logic, then the Australian swimmer Sullivan was the fastest overall being as he was in the same leg as Phelps(the starting leg) and he swam it faster.

its nothing like that.
u have no idea wat ur talking about, high jump and long jump r completely different 2 the 100&200. muscle groups different, components of fitness different, training methods used r different.
dear me, u hav no clue

it's still relevent, many swimmers still enter more events, of course not usually 8. Phelps is amazing, the best swimmer in the world, but bolt did enter all the events a sprinter could and won them all in wr time. i would say they r about even, but because bolt is way cooler i prefer his olympics

long jump is often ... ( 1 month ago by felixtzu)
long jump is often prepared for with essentially the same training as sprinting. Carl Lewis' coach even described his long jump as simply sprinting off the end of the board, and he's the best ever. Why would you post from a position of such ignorance?

dude u have ne idea wat ur talking about
What could you mean ... ( 1 month ago by felixtzu)
What could you mean by that? Carl Lewis is surely the best ever long jumper, the rest of what I said is fact. His coach definitely did say that, and top long jumpers do use the same physical training as sprinters.
I know exactly what I'm talking about: you clearly do not.

yes they do use the same training... on the run up, but they use different training for the actual jump
just because u can run it doesnt mean u can jump
The different ... ( 1 month ago by felixtzu)
The different training is predominantly the technical side of the event, not conditioning.
Some sprinters are totaly unsuited to jumping because of their body-shape, but those who do double-up don't really need to alter their training.
Usain Bolt has the potential to branch out in several directions.

Ya Bolt is quite a character =D. But u gotta remember, with Phelps entering 8 events, that's excluding heats and semis. In total,i think he swum 16 or 17 races. I'd say, at most, swimmers enter around 3 events max. Most swimmers train their whole lives for only one event; i.e. Ian Crocker only entered 100 fly. Phelps entered more than twice as much and WON THEM ALL. Hence, greatest athlete EVER

or maybe spitts (spelling?) is still no.1, coz there was one less event when he did it

well then wouldn't that just mean that phelps is that much better than Spitz (w a "tz" btw) because he did more than Spitz?
Spitz, the 'z' ... ( 1 month ago by FU0C0)
Spitz, the 'z' makes the name that much cooler. Prooobably, it's a fair point but I'm somewhat inclined to say that swimming back then is almsot a different sport to now. Back then, Fly was just freestyle with 2 arms and Back was just freestyle on your back. With today's technology and research, Fly and Back are almost completely strokes; there are distinct fly specialists and backstroke specialists that probably can't really swim free

yeah true, good points all round
sorry about the 'z'

Typical. This commentator failed to mention that Sullivan set (at the time) a world record in the 100m free (leadoff swimmers can do that in relays) of 47.24 (later lowered to 47.05 by Sullivan in the semis of the individual). If it was an American who set the world record im sure this commentator would have spent 16 hours talking about it.
What do you count ... ( 3 days ago by felixtzu)
What do you count as someone's league? You do realise Carl Lewis was Olympic champion and world record holder over 100m. Maybe if he was also from a country with no out of competition drug testing policy, he'd have been as fast as Bolt and Powell.
Array ( 3 days ago by felixtzu)
Smashed? 0.02 & 0.03. If Ben Johnson was American now, he'd definitely get caught; if Jamaican, he could be on whatever he wanted.
