Why do some people ... ( 3 weeks ago by Aeolus56)
Why do some people feel the need to rank guitarists? It's a purely subjective effort. Is Al Dimeola better that Larry Carlton? Is Andre Segovia better than Vince Gill? Is chocolate better than vanilla? One may render an opinion, but it's merely an opinion. Remember "Clapton is God?" Well, Clapton absolutely worships B.B. King--even though B.B. admits not knowing many chords. This is merely hero worship and has nothing to do with guitar as an art form. Still, the poster did display good taste.
I saw Johnny around ... ( 3 weeks ago by Aeolus56)
I saw Johnny around the same time--touring local venues with Leslie West and Corky Lang. West was okay--but not as good as he was when I saw him years ago after Papalardi was murdered and Mountain (obviously) broke up. Dino Daneli (of the Rascals) was with him & blazed on drums. But Johnny did look ill. He's almost blind; that may have partially explained him having to be helped on stage. But as you said, his riffs were uninspired and he looked tired. Sad, but I'll always remember him as he was.

I agree with you ... ( 2 weeks ago by blowingharp)
I agree with you 100%. Every guitarists has their own unique way of playing. The age old argument Hendrix vs Clapton. I love them both. Hendrix had his style and Clapton has his. I think they both have and had greatness in them and are awesome at what they did and do. Like you said...which is better chocolate or vanilla? I like vanilla personnely though... ha ha. What do I know I'm drunk...It's Friday night!

I saw Johnny around the same time and man he was painfully thin! I was about the same distance away and I had to keep telling myself to stop looking at him and listen to his brilliant playing. But you have to admit it's hard not to notice a cross eyed albino that is skinnier than a water spider.
Yeah, my wife ... ( 1 week ago by jimmcallister)
Yeah, my wife wanted to take him home and give him a feed ha ha! Actually she couldn't stand Johnny's records and only went to see him under sufferance. We left the hall that night with her raving non stop about how fantastic he was! I came home early one day and she had the vacuum cleaner going and Third Degree going even louder on the record player. I said: Who are you and what have you done with my wife? She replied: this is great! He sounds just like he did the other night on the record too.

I saw Winter at Madison Square Garden. Janis Joplin brought him out as a guest, and he was as great as this. Nobody can play the slide like him.
