Back in the day, the rapper was in control of the music. The producer just did his/her best to promote the rapper. Other times, the rapper did his/her own promotion. That was how it was when it started. The performer had to start from scratch and had to be creative at promoting to the masses.
Today, the producers/record execs have too much control over hiphop/R&B and the "performers" are merely interchangeable.

I couldn't say it any better. You are right on all angles for sure. Hip hop culture has lose a lot of it power because "the people" no longer control it that is us. When they took HipHop out it element the slums,hoods,projects and the streets it lose its hard cord edge. Like a fish out of water it is slowly dying. But put a fish or in this case a Shark back into the water then man, you better watch out because you can't mess with it. The power would be back into the hands who knows it best.

I agree wit' y'all. I remember the golden era very well, being that I was in high school during this time. From 1987-1996 rap was at its peak. I know y'all feel me on'at! Back when Yo! MTV Raps was doin' it, when Rap City had, The Mayor Chris Thomas, Big Lez, Joe Claire. What!!!?? When you could go to the record store just to cop a single! Anybody that was in junior high, high school, or college in that era know definitely wassup. Just hearing about that era don't do it justice. Peace, y'all!
