I was just curious about the distinction between irimi nage and kokyu nage. Is it correct that kokyu nage may include irimi nage so long as there are no joint locks? Or is irimi nage totally independant in and of itself? check out the video I posted for distinction

I guess it depends on who taught you and where you were taught. Irimi Nage is Segal's favorite move. It is definetly more approprite for a tall Nage, but not limited to. Figure 8 Koku-nage I always thought of as letting uke completely develop before turning you hips and getting that bannan-peel effect, which has to be one of the coolist feelings as a Nage. Hope I helped. God I miss Aikido.

Koykunage in ki aikido (or shin shin toitsu aikido)is what most aikidoka would call irimi nage. This is only one way of doing it though, there are lots from irimi and lots from tenkan also, but visually speaking, a kokyunage from irimi looks pretty much like an iriminage..if that helps

As you progress in your practice you'll find that kokyunage is not really a mechanical technique that always looks the same or at least similar like most of the other techniques, but that it can look completely different depending on what form it's from. It means 'breath thow' and its really about in and out, or up and down, or withdrawal, then explode outwards.
