Searchlight Rag (Scott Joplin)

Uploaded by: Kamibambiraptor
Video Description:
Wistful and yearning at the start, a more upbeat middle section and a grand, ball-room dance-like ending. I play more with the base in this piece, rhythmically, than I usually do with Scott Joplin's rags.

Thanks! I do play somewhat slower; it's a matter of preference at least with most of Scott Joplin's rags: some other rags I do like to play at a faster tempo. "Raggy Rag" by Floyd Willis is one (not posted yet).

@theragtimefan, it is not a matter of speed.
Very nice, but this is not Ragtime. Scott Joplin himself has written a "School of Ragtime"; try it! Ragtime is counting "1-2-1-2". You play Boogie Woggie. Or Wiener Walzer.

I posted it a little while ago, but it's easy to lose things in the welter of my vids, so I've created various playlists to help people out. It's in the 'Ragtime Piano' playlist. :)

Could you POSSIBLY play any slower?! Terrible. How about waiting until you can play it right before osting it?

everyone plays at their own speed, I like it faster, but im not going to complaine about it. I mean im a beginner organist, and only play "what I call" childish beginner music. he's playing a harder piece. I understand everyone has their own oppinion, but to me that was just plain rude. Oh well sorry if I saied anything to offend you, you have your own opinion. Well have a great week.

I must admit I was strongly tempted to respond "Well, if it would bother you..." but decided just to let him have his say. He didn't have to watch, after all!
A lot of people seem to like Ragtime faster; while I do find some charm in playing Ragtime 'fast & light', I find more interest in playing the pieces at a more relaxed tempo. (*I do intend to post a fast-time version of a Rag some day, just so I can say "There ya' go!" to people. ;) )
Anyway, thank you for your post! :)
I agree. :) Some ... ( 3 months ago by Kamibambiraptor)
I agree. :) Some other composers' ragtime music might sound better at a faster pace, but Joplin seems to have been more interested in exploring the emotional and expressive potentials of Ragtime, and you lose a lot of that with a fast tempo I feel.
