Most historians, atleast those who were not impacted by vietnam, see LBJ as one of the greatest domestic reformers of the 20th century. Sure vietnam dragged his legacy, but actually take a look at all the laws he passed during his presidency. Most of them are being used today! aka medicare, poverty reforms, and the 1964 civil rights bill.

Not to re-ignite the argument but I still consider LBJ's support of Democracy in South Vietnam one of his greatest efforts to go along with his civil rights efforts. Yes I am a Texan and I wish all of you could visit the LBJ Library in Austin. Whether you hate, like, love or are ambivalant about President Johnson it is a great opportunity to see the things that impacted the thinking back then. I'm also willing to defend President Bush, now that should generate PRev1 my old friend to respond!

Well, I do try to pay attention to what's going on around here. Like... That "Video Response" from the Massachusetts School of Law (up top there). Have you watched that?
Apparently, LBJ was a "life-long racist".
-- Imagine my surprise!
As for Dubya...?
There's no defending him.
Bush and his whole cabal of cronies are war criminals. Plain and simple.
In fact...
BushCo makes Karadzic's crew look like a bunch of Boy Scouts.

Just watched it. If one accepts entirely what is in the video then you must ask why AFTER becoming President was LBJ motivated to do anything on the Civil Rights front? Just politics? Maybe but arguably those politics cost his party the South since that time almost without exception. I have read several books about LBJ and I still don't feel like I have a real understanding of what made the guy "tick". But I do personaly believe his actions were without question in our(USA) interests.

Yup, and Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves...
Sometimes it all just seems to work out...
For the better interests...
And, the greater good.
Whatever LBJ's reasons were...
I, for one, am glad he did his part for Civil Rights.
Vietnam...?
Totally different story...
But, that's not what the video clip is about...
Now, is it...?

The equal rights bill and voting rights act
in the 60's helped make possible the election
today. People shouldn't forget what LBJ did
and tried to do for his country. It's a shame
that many of the southern democrats turned
their backs on a president who was standing up for something that helped so many people.
LBJ understood ... ( 2 months ago by greeniem)
LBJ understood poverty and racism. He was a teacher, actually, of mexican kids in texas, and a graduate from southwest texas teachers college. He was also human, not perfect. The need to be elected before you can be a statesmen neccesitated him to not back civil rights as texas got more conservative. But when he saw the chance to do right, he did. He used his capital in the presidency. I'm so glad he's getting the credit he deserves. I'm a big fan. He was a great president. And a great democrat!

Bush is nothing ... ( 1 month ago by Overman1)
Bush is nothing compared to Lyndon Johnson. I disagree greatly with his policies on Vietnam, but Johnson, for his flaws, was a compassionate, deeply committed man who broke ranks with his party at a time when it was 40% or more southern-oriented for the betterment of all mankind. Bush has done nothing of the sort, and is incapable of anything like it in terms of his character. He would not break with the Republicans for homosexuals, for instance. He is a weak-kneed, weak-willed leader.
"Stupid"? Do you ... ( 1 month ago by Overman1)
"Stupid"? Do you realize that prior to this Act, millions of African-Americans in the southern United States could not vote, and when they weren't chased from the polls were asked questions such as, "How many bubbles are in a bar of soap" to prevent them from voting?
Garbage. Bush's ... ( 1 month ago by Overman1)
Garbage. Bush's so-called 'liberal spending' record has been almost *entirely* on the Iraq War, though that is admittedly a very expensive conflict. In almost every other area of government Bush has slashed domestic spending (most notably, and most horrifically, FEMA) up until 2006, at which point he became largely apathetic towards governing and permitted the Democratic congress to set the agenda.
