Wow I cant believe the song is copyright 1982! i remember hearing Bit Time and Sledgehammer in the late 80s, then they must have re-released Shock the Monkey - I always thought it was a later release.
And you can tell its timeless as you can slip it into an alternative crowd labelled 'retro' and they wont throw stuff at the stage!

Of course, nobody told me whether this song was about his own monkey...I believe he was one of those rockers who had to kick a nasty opioid addiction. All that Indian music injected into his music...I side effect of his pursuit of serenity. Has anyone had these thoughts besides me?

Well, wardog91, I wish that I could validate your thoughts about electro-shock therapy. Actually, it is known as ECT or electro-convulsive therapy. ECT induces a controlled seizure which ultimately allows that patient to forget. The lack of remembrance brings the patient out of deep depression. It is a last resort but not removed from the realms of modern psychiatry. Your comment has caused me to research Peter Gabriel's inspiration further. Have an excellent day!

It seems that I was mistaken. This is culled from Wikipedia: "Gabriel himself has described "Shock the Monkey" as "a love song" that examines how jealousy can release one's baser instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy." Heh, I know that much of Wikipedia is considered dubious, but this has a reference, so... lol I guess that we were all wrong- live and learn, eh?

Peter Gabriel was kind of handsome back in the day. He never looks the same in his videos. I always have to blink a few times to really be sure it is him. You don't know until he smiles, I mean Games w/out Frontiers, Sledehammer, Solisbury Hill, this one, he always looks different somehow. I don't know maybe I am weird. But I do love his smile and voice.

the monkey is a metaphor, he is not explicitly singing about shocking monkeys although the video makes it as he is.
