We have to remember ... ( 2 days ago by Orangewind)
We have to remember that everybody has a different test given. Jack Johnson had a tougher test on his hands than say Rocky Marciano: both in the opponents inside the ring as well as outside the ring. Just like Lennox Lewis would have a different test than Tyson.
Everything matters in the end on how well you do.
Tyson's main ... ( 2 days ago by Orangewind)
Tyson's main opponent (besides what Larry Merchant would say, "Tyson himself"), was the heavy pressure that a 20 year old kid had to deal with being the most famous athlete in the World along with the many other factors that were placed on him. In the End, Tyson couldn't handle it and that was his biggest loss.

TheCreativeContinuum: Adversity in a fight: How about Bruno and Ruddock.
Both were after he left Rooney and wasn't trained properly...as well as being a more inactive fighter under King, which isn't good.
For the fights: Bruno stunned him bad and Tyson came back to win.
Ruddock hurt him bad and Tyson came back to win. Both Ruddock and Bruno were also bigger than Tyson but most were.
To me, if you are stunned like that it is the same as being knocked down and coming back to win.

People forget the reason why Tyson didn't go down early and suffer those flash-knockdowns is because he had incredibly strong legs and a strong chin...so why fault him for it?
If you are hurt, you are hurt.
After prison, forget it; he was a complete mess.
Motivation is key to becoming "Great" and it is Key for "Heart."
Lost that, you lose.

Mike Tyson is really affectionate to those he cares about. Is there a problem with that?
If you think it's gay, maybe you should tell Mike face to face... maybe that wasn't the right figure of speech. :)

tyson is naturally the strongest guy ever as he could still compete using a weakening drug as cannabis
being stunned is ... ( 1 day ago by TheCreativeContinuum)
being stunned is not adversity, fighters get their bells rung in fights all the time and still win. That's not really a test. Tyson still dominated those fights. There were pockets of resistance from those opponents. Doesn't represent a test. A test is Leonard Hearns 1, when Robinson lost the title and in the rematch was cut and needed a KO to win and then KO'ed the opponent forgot the guy's name. Those are tests. Tyson never passed his.
Don't get me wrong ... ( 1 day ago by TheCreativeContinuum)
Don't get me wrong now. 19-22 year old Tyson was a complete monster, though not invincible, he was the best of that era. However, the "peak" argument is moot, because in the end it's the career you judge. We could do peak comparisons all day. Peak Liston versus peak Tyson, Peak Holmes verus Peak Tyson (which would be a different fight) - I love Tyson because he was the destroyer we all wanted, but his career doesn't warrant a top ten nod.
I think it is a ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
I think it is a test. Fighters get knocked down and look alright and come back to win and get credit; they argue this with Marciano. Tyson was hurt bad at least twice in his career before going to prison:
Bruno(I)and Ruddock fights. You also have to remember that Tyson when he fought Ruddock was also trying to come back after that devastating loss to Douglas.
Tyson didn't go ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
Tyson didn't go down because he was able to take an incredible beating and had strong legs and refused to go down until he was finished...that's something.
I've even heard boxers say they've been hurt worse during fights while standing then when they got knocked down, so I think the point stands.
But I understand your point. I just give Tyson a little more credit given his age as well. He obviously blew his career away right after Spinks.
Depends on how you ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
Depends on how you look at it: Full career and look at Ali's, Holmes's, Robinson's, etc. losses. Prime: Mentally and Physically at his best. Ali before his exile. Robinson before his first retirement (and maybe slightly before). Tyson stopped with Spinks since he didn't train properly without Rooney.
Holmes vs. Tyson at ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
Holmes vs. Tyson at their peaks: Actually, Teddy Atlas (who I will use for this discussion), actually said Tyson had prepared for Holmes since he was about 15 years old. Cus had Atlas go over Larry's fights and told Mike how to beat him and said he would if they ever met. Atlas gave the reasons why even a Prime Holmes could lose to the Tyson, Holmes fought.
Top 10: Marciano is ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
Top 10: Marciano is considered top 10 by many and look who he beat: a bunch of past prime fighters that were more known for their LH careers than anything. Tyson defeated his HOF LH in Michael Spinks (who was undefeated at the time) in 90 seconds.
However, resume wise: NO, Tyson isn't top 10. Top 10 talent, yes, but also a top 10 waste of talent.
I think Tyson has become overrated and underrated. What he did while motivated and trained under Rooney and then without Rooney, makes it so.
It is really ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
It is really something to watch Tyson's career from his debut to his first loss to Douglas. From 18-20 (when he won the title), you could see his skill and confidence grow with each fight. From 20 years old to Michael Spinks fight, he got even better...especially with patience and confidence. After, without Rooney, he was on his own, digressed, and never was able to get it back.
I've read that he ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
I've read that he was continuing to get better all the time in training but only bits and pieces would transfer over to his fights because it wasn't perfected; he was still young and maturing even with Spinks. It would have been interesting to see where he would have been at 25-29 under Rooney. But, it wasn't so. Events happen that shape our lives and Tyson made crucial mistakes that cost him and thats all a part of it.
It just would have ... ( 22 hours ago by Orangewind)
It just would have been interesting to see if he had what Patterson and Torres had, D'Amato, if he would have matured better and stayed the course. But, even Tyson said, he also had advantages that other fighters didn't have, D'Amato, so....
bottom line is ... ( 19 hours ago by fievel3782)
bottom line is prime Tyson gave us something we have never seen before in the HW division....complete domination
Holmes - we saw that style with Ali
Lewis - boring
Holyfield - the real deal? how about steroid allegations?
Who cares about what Tyson did after Rooney left? He really sucked after that for all the various reasons. What he did in his prime was extraordinary enough to put him in top 10 in my book.
