to me, this song,the line up, the haunting sounds was just the best of genesis, steve ding his magic on lead, and yet how good is tony, he just knows how to make a 12 string sound as it should. i adore this song, always have and always will.

hey let's listen to --sledge hammer what a great piece of pop shit!!i just haven't got my head around what everyone thinks he(peter)did for this combo--the art came from phil,mike, steve& tony maybe the rock drive was from peter.i just don't hear it.i just wish i had done something in my life(as genesis)to be so deeply diasected.everyone has the right to an opinion but what makes us worthy to pass judgement?record and concert ticket sales decide,not talk!

Tbe best Genesis album, end of. Other albums might have good individual songs, but as a cohesive one, nothing can beat Trick of the Tail

1980 seems to have killed prog. Even though Duke had a couple of good tracks, the band entered a new era at the start of a new decade. why does 50's 60's 70' 80' music all have styles that stick almost cleanly to the calendar? hasn't happened since has it? will it happen again?

no...definitely it's not their best album, but it define a new era for Genesis, an era without one of the most influentual artist of the 20th century...Peter Gabriel. And for me, after the departure of Steve, Genesis missed some sort of sensitivity on their guitar solo. Steve was a another big loss for Genesis, but like any other great artist, they knew how to compose great songs and how integrate in the 21th century.

This theory is very popular among fans, but I don't think it's true that Phil took over Genesis to make them sell out. Look at PGs solo work, he also "went 80's". It was just a new musical era, for better or worse.

For me these guys created the most magical music especially on "Wind And Wuthering" and "Trick Of The Tail". Complex yet it soothes the soul. Love Tony Bank's playing.

this band had to recover from the departure of gabriel & soon afterwards steve had to go & they were lucky because they had Phil & they recovered their pop became more commercial but they produced great hits & that was the general atmosphere prevailing in the 80s 90s....

If you look at the structure of stuff like Home By The Sea and Driving the Last Spike..everything on Trick of the Tail..they didn't change..even the pop they produced was Genesis pop..tongue in cheek and great music..Seperately they had different stuff, whan together it was Genesis..A Trick was superior and what a lead in to ABACAB

Agreed. I belong to the group of people who are not of the "official" opinion: "Peter Gabriel is a god and Genesis went down after Steve left". I think that the core trio of Genesis is Tony, Phil and Mike. Together they do magic. they even survived the 80s which killed many (if not most) 70s acts.
