Red food coloring is often made of Carmine dye which comes from the cochineal bug.
Carmine is used as a food dye in many different products such as juice, ice cream, yogurt, and candies, eyeshadow, lipstick, etc. Although principally a red dye, it is found in many foods that are shades of red, pink, and purple. As a food dye it has been known to cause severe allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock in some people.

I already knew about bug when I went to Colombia as I accidently stumbled upon an item called "Carmin" in the ingredients list of a deli item. This turned out to be the red color obtained from a bug called "Cochinilla". I can't believe the consumers are so easily fooled by the food industry. Companies using that stuff should be sued for hiding this information!!!

i been knew that the fda has a manual i dont know where u can get it, but i saw it on the discovery channel. Where alot of lettuce actually let me say produce has at least a percentage.. actually there are couple of foods, but this interesting also..
