Supreme Court begins new term

Video Description:
Hello on this Monday, the first day of October 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update.
The U.S. Supreme Court is beginning its new term today with a docket of emotional cases that have divided the country. The Court will take a fourth look at how the Bush administration and Congress handle terrorism detainees. It's also considering the constitutionality of lethal injection as well as a party battle on voting rights that will fall in the middle of next year's presidential election.
Congress is shifting its focus from Iraq and terrorism issues to domestic ones like healthcare and taxes. Democrats have already proposed spending an additional $35 million on the State Children's Health Insurance program, which President Bush says is excessive and promised to veto. They're also reportedly planning to bring up issues like hate crimes, taxation, and universal health care. Republicans are apparently gearing up to challenge Democrats on spending and look for taxation and illegal immigrant confrontations.
Israeli officials say they've released fifty-seven Palestinian prisoners to the West Bank after a delay of several hours. There was no explanation for the delay. Another 30, who were scheduled to be released, are still being held. The prisoners are being let go as a goodwill gesture to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas before he meets with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Wednesday to discuss an upcoming Mideast peace conference.
African peacekeepers are searching for more than 20 members of their force still missing in Darfur after rebels overran their base in an unprecedented attack. The attack happened yesterday in northern part of the region ahead of peace talks later this month. The battle killed at least 10 peacekeepers. Rebels there have grown increasingly hostile to the struggling 7 thousand member African Union force, saying the force favors the government and has failed to protect Darfur civilians.
That's all for now. Check out our new special series called "Abandoned Babies." You can find that by going to our homepage, upi.com. Thanks for watching.

| Why have a supreme court? The patriot act distorts all constitutional law. They could just have kangaroo trials now if they wanted to. Now that the US has dissolved it's core (the constitution) and what it stands for their is no United States. |

| "hate crimes" You mean like when I see footage of 5 or 10 black or mexicans beating down a white guy. Oh I think I know what mean. That's what you mean right. Or maybe you think some upset white guy calling a black criminal an explicit more of a hate crime. Yeah sounds like more bull to me. |
