3D MMORPGs have ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
3D MMORPGs have been out for a long time now. Those are GUIs, and they are on the "web". There is nothing new about 3D, just about the way they want to apply it. That's what I'm trying to say here. This web 2.0/3.0 stuff is just a marketing term for the way they're applying existing technologies, nothing more.
Do a search for ... ( 4 months ago by touredo)
Do a search for stuff like Openlazlo, silverlight, papervision3d, sandy3d, away3d and with a little reading you will be able to catch up on the stugg that 3D MMOPG's were never able to do because of basic faulty design and lack of real interaction without a server connection. This stuff is pretty much alpha/beta for now and you obviously dont even have a clue about what is being talked about. This is not "existing technology" like you state. I wont even go into semantic web here.
Uh, Silverlight is ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
Uh, Silverlight is just more MS bullshit attempting to look like Mac OS's, OpenLaszlo is a live software delivery tool developed with existing technologies, Papervision3d is a 3d engine using flash, sandy3d is another 3d engine, I'm guessing away3d is another engine you're excited about. MMORPGs had a completely different goal, and that's what you need to understand. Things like OpenLaszlo DO interact with servers, that's exactly how they fucking deliver content.
You think 3d ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
You think 3d engines are new? People have been creating new 3d engines for a long time, and now all of a sudden because businesses choose to apply them in a different way than before, there's a new web? No, it's a new web if you're a user, not if you're a developer.
Also, what exactly ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
Also, what exactly can they do that "3D [MMORPGs]" could never do? There was no faulty design, you jackass. The games do exactly what they're intended to do. Of course a new 3D engine might be better, but that's why people work on new engines all the fucking time. How does that indicate the development of a "new" web? Technology is all about innovation, new ideas, languages, 3d engines, etc. are developed all the time based off of ideas that already exist.
Getting back to ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
Getting back to your original point, OpenLaszlo uses Ajax, which is existing technology. Innovation has occurred since the beginning of mankind, but all of a sudden we see a bunch of user-generated content sites pop up and people say there's a new fucking internet. Even your friend in his podium there admitted it's just a marketing term, why can't you? As for the "semantic web", it's just simplified usage.
The "semantic web" ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
The "semantic web" utilizes existing technologies that define data more - hence semantics - like XML or Turtle. It's great, it simplifies things for users, a developer should always strive to make users happy. However, it only appears as something new to the users. Developers understand that it's just the same shit at its core. Anyways, I stand by my original point, 3D interfaces are only valuable in certain applications. You're not going to look for a song name in 3D.
Naturally, you ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
Naturally, you COULD accomplish all these things with a 3D UI, but it would complicate things more. While it might be easier for some people who don't type quickly or don't know what the fuck they're doing anyways, for normal people there's nothing wrong with just typing in what you want to search in a text box on, say, Google. For a user like myself, adding a 3D UI would actually make things less efficient.
Wow, your so off ... ( 4 months ago by touredo)
Wow, your so off the beat it's like talking to a shut in ermite from a cave in afghanistan. I was going to post links to what you should read up, so your mind would not stay so shaped by dead paradigms, but sentences like "You're not going to look for a song name in 3D" and "There was no faulty design, you jackass." really state that you are stuck where you deserve.
So you didn't prove ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
So you didn't prove me wrong on anything here. My point was that 3D UIs are only practical in certain applications, and that video games engines did not possess "faulty design" because they did exactly what they were intended to do. Go ahead and prove anything I've said wrong, though, instead of just pointing out random things that conform to the ideas of "Web 2.0" and telling me I don't know what I'm talking about.
Technology in Web ... ( 4 months ago by Twelveinchpvpness)
Technology in Web 2.0 stays relatively the same, the only difference is that the ideas that come from it - as well as from the semantic web - deliver data in a different manner than before. I am arguing from a technological standpoint, not from a user's eyes. Take a moment to respond to my myriad of posts from before, though - this time with a rebuttal, instead of simply disregarding everything I've said and pushing me aside.
Web 3.0 isn't here ... ( 3 months ago by hyretech)
Web 3.0 isn't here yet, transitions are 10-20 year events.
The shift from mainframe to client/server took 20 years (1977-1997). Web took 15 years (1993-2007).
Web 2.0 means UI code+data move around the network - security still has to catch up.
AJAX is a (leaky) placeholder until better protocols, trust models, and designs come along.
My forecast: Web 3.0 means agents flying through clouds of data+apps, using SOA. XML can help.
Following the core computer science technologies will help.

my web 3.5 ... ( 3 months ago by stopbeingnice)
my web 3.5 prediction ? Application companies build web based versions of their software. Even the Desktop will be web based. The Computer will be simply a display based machine that really only needs a web browser.
