Guam's Hispanic Dances (4)
Uploaded by: kuraku3
Video Description:
Performance of Spanish era style dancing. For over 300 years Guam was a stop-over point for Spanish Galleons sailing from Acapulco, Mexico to Manila. The blending of things both native and Spanish developed into Guam's rich Hispanic culture.
Spanish and Mexican sailors introduced many new styles of dancing to the islanders. These dances combined both native Chamorro and Hispanic-Mexican styles. The style of dress for both male and female dancers came most likely from the southern parts of Mexico. In the state of Chiapas, Mexico many dances are also performed with bare feet. Also, many of the dress styles are almost identical to that of Chamorro dancers.
This Chamorro 'stick dance' may have been inspired by the Mexican 'machete dance', but utilizes bamboo sticks in place of iron machetes.
Click the links below to see a Mexican machete dance, as well as dances from the state of Chiapas. And take note of the similarities to many Chamorro-Hispanic dances.
