Hell themes and ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
Hell themes and living dead are certainly parts of the hidden narrative and are discussed in later portions of the vid.
No, my opinions ... ( 1 month ago by LordEsper)
No, my opinions have nothing to do with my attachment to the military, in some areas of your report I was simply thrown aback. For example, during the beginning of the sniper scene, cowboy refuses to help his friends who are being picked off, in which you criticized his integrity for. He states earlier that he's "Seen this before" which isn't unbelievable. The fact the sniper did not initially pick off her targets is a common sniper move to draw out more targets to be trapped, resulting in...
a maximum casualty ... ( 1 month ago by LordEsper)
a maximum casualty rate, by 'baiting' comrades into rescuing their friends and psychologically damaging them into a point of frenzy. In my opinion however, I believe your interpretation of Stanley portraying the Vietnam portion of the movie "macho" "falsely-portrayed" "Adrenaline ride" is incorrect. The interviews were tools to bring life to newly introduced characters, and as the movie progressed, to show an emphasis on different characters strengths and weaknesses throughout the movie.
That's fair comment ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
That's fair comment and on it's own merit I would agree. In the context of all the other subliminals in the sniper scene and Cowboys interview claims of the war being "there's the enemy kill em" ... I'd say Kubrick is revealing the reality of Cowboy being terrified in battle as opposed to the false macho cockiness of his interview. There's also the subliminal link to Walter Whitman's killing spree in Texas which Cowboy had "seen before".
Then why did ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
Then why did Kubrick place a Vietnamese sign on top of the sniper building that reads "All United States"?
What you're talking about is the surface narrative of the film. Kubrick was unique in that he made films that had a propaganda worthy (in this case pro-war) surface story, but he reversed those stories in the encoded subliminals of the film.
While perceptions ... ( 1 month ago by LordEsper)
While perceptions of each character is unique, a commonplace tone is that in war, their are a lot of jerks, but a small irony in portraying the wickedness of people in war is that the main character narrating the story, and the friends he surrounded himself with, all portrayed an innocence to them or a child-like evolution into darkness or 'manhood', with Joker being the last to make that step.
As far as the ... ( 1 month ago by LordEsper)
As far as the subliminals go, I agree with you entirely, but I think somewhere in our discussion I may have trailed off or you might have (it doesn't matter really) from what we were discussing. Originally I stated that the bias undertone of your narrative seemed a bit overzealous, as if you weren't explaining a subliminal theme at all but explaining opinion over fact. However in the Cowboys and Indians section you stood tall explaining your stance which I agreed with.
That makes sense. ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
That makes sense. Being that Kubrick's messages in FMJ are so intensely anti-military brainwashing, I think it takes a person who thinks along those lines to be able to identify the subliminals that support it. So yes I am biased in this review. However, I still think the review is a worthwhile watch for any film fan because I back up the majority of me interpretations with very specific details - far more than most 'established' critics bother to.
I also don't ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
I also don't believe it's possible for anyone to truly offer an unbiased opinion of a film. Everyone brings the prejudices and assumptions of their own experience to their interpretation - but if that is too much the case then gaping holes can easily be found by viewers / readers.
On a more positive level, the main purpose of my reviews is to help ppl acquire a much deeper understanding of film psychology.
For what it's worth ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
For what it's worth, I do find the messaging in FMJ to be in parts degrading to soldiers. Soldiers have at certain times in history protected us against real threats as opposed to fighting wars for the profit of imperialist governemnts and profit hungry corporations. There's also the problem of everyday ppl being severely lazy about their role in the world - a quality I find very repulsive. Soldiering to an extent breaks ppl out of that.
I agree with you ... ( 1 month ago by LordEsper)
I agree with you there on your previous statements. While the killing spree theory is certainly plausible, I had to link that scene closer to home when the Drill instructor spoke of the Kennedy assassination earlier in the movie with an outdated rifle with amazingly precise accuracy given the details of the weapon were complete crap, and perhaps an intended irony in the female sniper using an AK-47 to snipe at an estimated distance of over 600 meters which would be near impossible with any AK-47
Good point about ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
Good point about the AK. I knew a little about that rifle (from movies of course lol) and it did seem an odd choice for a sniper to carry.

There isn't a single point to the video. It covers many facets of the film and Kubrick's varying methods.
If you have read ... ( 4 weeks ago by squarepusher2)
If you have read Carrol Quigley's books (in particular The Anglo-American Establishment), you'd find that even World War I and II were staged wars for profits, and that the National Socialists and communists were allowed into existance by heavy funding from Wall Street.
National-socialism and Communism were basically two experiments of centralized power - the ensuing war (World War II) was the laboratory where the financers pitted them against each other.
I haven't read that ... ( 4 weeks ago by robag88)
I haven't read that book, but prof Anthony C Sutton says more or less the same thing in his books. I agree. Those two paradigms both serve the same goal - centralization of economic and political power.

You should read his books, especially if you have already read Anthony Sutton's brilliant books. Tragedy and Hope is a big book, though, but well worth it - definitely changes your perspective on history.
