Grand Theft Congo - DRC

Uploaded by: journeymanpictures
Video Description:
July 2005
The major problem facing Africa is corruption and control of resources. In the DRC, the military is stealing minerals to sell to Western companies.
At a remote mine in central DRC, workers with torches and pick axes hack at the ruddy earth. They are mining cassiterite, a mineral vital in the production of laptops and mobile phones. But dispersed among the miners are Congolese Government troops -- in plain clothes for the camera -- literally forcing most workers to work at gunpoint. 'The soldiers always steal everything. They even come to shoot people down the mineshafts,' complains Regina Maponda. Western greed for cassiterite is fuelling the boom -- at an airfield near the mine, soldiers jealously guard their loot as it makes it way to Japan and the West. Conflict mining is a curse, and it is difficult to see what the G8 leaders can do.

i went to the UN ... ( 3 months ago by suril22)
i went to the UN headquarters recentely in NY. the tour passed an inverted triangle which represented world spending. weapons: 987 billion/year was at the top. the tour guide said (and this is a fact) if we could use only 15% of this money we could erase 10 of the worst problems we face on earth within a couple of decades (i.e. hunger, poverty, malnutrition, etc.). but, we dont. we would rather invade countries for our own self-interests. i do wonder how future generation will see us.

damarez- the evil of slavery ended long before anyone commenting here was even born so it is hardly the key explanation for a modern conflict. And no, I do not think it is 'their' fault. It is not the fault of the thousands of women arbitralily raped or the child soldiers who are forced to fight. It is the fault of the sadist leaders of the tribal militias hellbent on wiping each other off the face of the earth. The people to blame are the Joseph Kony's of this world. You sound like Mugabe.

Money does not solve the problem, money is the problem! I would like to know how much money is donated to Africa each year and you would probably see that 99 % of it goes in the governments corrupt pockets. Money is just paper. Ignorance and greed is what causes poverty.

However, the Congolese citizens should stop agreeing to mine. They are agreeing to destroy their country for $5.00. It is a lose, lose situation, they aren't receiving the benefit of their bargain which is money or food for their work. But there action are deeper than that, they are allowing the 2nd largest rain forest and their Country be destroyed. Nothing to export if they don't have workers.

this is how we blacks will never be like the developped countries. on pense toujours que l'aide viendra des blancs, des autres. l'heure de missionaires est déjà passé, on est habitué à tendre la main pour qu'on nous donne toujours. et on veut blâmer les autres pour tous nos maux. quand es-ce qu'on va commencer à prendre nos responsabilités? on est tous hypocrites, ou egoïstes, toujours voulant nos propres intérêts. c'est vraiment triste et revoltant.

Well its no wonder that the name UN sounds big but big for nothing. They neither create peace nor keep peace. Many African countries have the resources and skills that can rebuild the entire continent but they dont think wisely. If you dont think again you will always suffer and be in the White man's shoes.
