hm, i smell a douchebag right here. If Dream Theater aren't prog then I don't know what is.
and FUCK YOU!
Exactly! At least ... ( 1 week ago by guitarzan73)
Exactly! At least youre honest! If you think DT is prog then you actually in fact DONT know what prog is...just like you said. PS-for starters, actual prog bands dont do entire albums/live sets of covers tunes by Metallica,Deep Purple,Iron Maiden,Pink Floyd,etc-or anyone else. Listen to Mahavishnu Orchestra if you wanna hear what actual prog music sounds like, cause you wont find it in DT and their covers

everything was great except for the vocals. they weren't great. GO AHEAD GIMME A THUMBS DOWN FOR VOICING MY OPINION COME ON BRING IT.

no band does full album covers, it has nothing to do with them not being prog, which they are. they're basically the worlds biggest prog band atm.

Good cover, Pink Floyd would be proud of them
DT has covered ... ( 5 days ago by guitarzan73)
DT has covered entire albums live by pink floyd, metallica, deep purple etc. This indeed has alot to do with them not being very "prog" At least to a true prog fan. I would feel stupid calling a band "prog" that includes,in a concert,an entire album of cover tunes--so should you.
i meant no other ... ( 5 days ago by divinityboy)
i meant no other bands,i know theyve done it. and if it has so much to do with them being/not being prog, u must have many good reasons as to why.
explain.
Prog music avoids ... ( 5 days ago by guitarzan73)
Prog music avoids common musical structures, familiarities and pushes musical boundaries ahead into a territory which seems unexplored. Doing a night of cover tunes(especially of extremely successful contemporary rock albums)is the exact opposite of what "progressive" is
maybe you havnt ... ( 5 days ago by divinityboy)
maybe you havnt heard The Dance of Eternity, but there's something like 16 time sig changes in it. as with many other songs.
they were paying tribute to their heroes and influences. if you seriously think that maybe 10h out of a 25 year career makes them not prog, then your not too smart

-and the majority ... ( 4 days ago by guitarzan73)
-and the majority of that 25 years was spent imitating Queensryche!-Yet another unprog DT move(IE getting their original singer from a Queensryche tribute band and his subsequent replacements also imitating Geoff Tate)to make their rock concept albums just like Queensryche and use a logo that looks similar to QR's Operation Mindcrime logo. Wow-how "progressive" and "fresh"
Queensryche is not ... ( 4 days ago by divinityboy)
Queensryche is not mentioned by any member to be a major influence. their original singer was hired after he was heard singing a Q song. not in a cover band. i just looked up "Eyes of a Stranger", and he sounds nothing like james at all. lots of bands have made concept albums other than Q you, so you cant say they copied them.
and the logo thing...your desperate to prove your point arnt you. they look nothing alike.
Youre wrong. Their ... ( 4 days ago by guitarzan73)
Youre wrong. Their original singer Chris Collins was in a Queensryche tribute band. And they often mention Queensryche as an influence. Why was his replacement fired? As Portnoy said,(look it up if you want)"He sounded like Billy Joel singing for Queensryche". Its blatently obvious theyre influenced by them and well documented. Youre in deep denial if you think those logos look "apples and oranges" different.
2nd sentence: which ... ( 4 days ago by divinityboy)
2nd sentence: which again means nothing. 3rd sentence: iv never heard any reference to them as influences. dominici was fired becuase he had different ideas on where he wanted DT to go, and he wasnt fullfilling his role as a frontman very well.
im not in denial at all. how are the logos similar?

2nd sentence does ... ( 4 days ago by guitarzan73)
2nd sentence does mean something-for one,it means you were wrong. It also means that if a band didnt like QR,why would they hire a singer from a QR tribute band? Geez, read interviews of DT! Search "John Petrucci" at answers(dot)com. What band did he name as an influence?-You guessed it-Queensryche. Surprize-You were wrong again! PS-do I really have to explain how the logos look similar for you too?..and you actually think I'M the idiot here~~riiight

people hire singers ... ( 3 days ago by divinityboy)
people hire singers cos they can sing.
i hae A7X, bit if i hired a singer who rocked and later found out he came from a A7X cover band, would i care? no, cos he rules at singing.
JP didnt say that himself, and iv still never heard a DT member personally mention Q as an influence.
and the logo, yes :)
Of course!Someone ... ( 3 days ago by guitarzan73)
Of course!Someone just randomly picked a band that Petrucci never mentioned before as influencial to write in his bio! Need another example? In an interview w/ Portnoy from ytsejam(dot)com, the interviewer asks him about a DT song which sounds similar to a QR song.(Surprise surprise) Portnoy says,QUOTE,"Back in the early days when we formed,we were seriously into the (QR album)Rage For Order-it was a favorite of ours".
when they formed. ( ... ( 2 days ago by divinityboy)
when they formed. (enough about them liking Q, youve proved it.)
and they also had rush, metallica, yes, all those, so you cant pick out one band and say they copy them. i personally think they copied metallica a bit more.
and they havnt covered a Q album have they.
I think Petrucci ... ( 1 day ago by flash7725)
I think Petrucci shows a lot of class and maturity by remaining faithful to Gilmour's rendition. Very nicely done.
