Actually, the demographics show that most of the country is still conservative. So hope and wish all you want, USA is still a conservative nation. I think the people said yes to change, not no to reactionary politics. Tell me what is change? The liberal montage "Change". Well, we know what does NOT work -- the tax-rebate-and-spend policies of the late conservative era. People under 30 voted for Obama by a 2 to 1 margin. This was the same signal of a sea change that marked the onset of the so-called "Reagan Era". The GOP ultimately proved inept at both foreign policy and domestic affairs.

FYI, I paid my own way through college by working two jobs while going to school, and I did not take out any government loans, so your basic premise is flawed, like so much of your thinking. I don't want or expect anything from the government except social justice and the maintenance of order. If that constitutes cowardice in your book, so be it.
I just happen to believe that the people who do the work deserve to be fairly compensated, even if it means lower profits.

Actually, no it's not. The UAW is a perfect example of the liberal mindset. The big 3 pay an average of 75$ for labor cost while the foreign automakers pay 45$. Now, when they were asked do you think you should have take pay cuts so you can still keep your job the answer?
