I do understand ... ( 2 months ago by robag88)
I do understand that. I'm not saying the films is only about war on terror parallels. It's just the main focus of this review because I find it more interesting.
Neo receives his ... ( 2 months ago by robag88)
Neo receives his first "wake up" calls over the net. The matrix at least in part does represent cyberspace. If you think the film is only about reincarnation cycles then you need to post an article or video explaining that in detail as I've done. I think ur misleading yourself. Go watch the wachowski's V for Vendetta - they're anti war on terror, anti police state, and anti corruption.
I think the success ... ( 2 months ago by Symphonitron)
I think the success of the Matrix is partially due to its target audience enjoying themes that explore antiauthoritarianism. Male teens and young adults have always been rebellious, having just hatched out of the rules and regulations of parental household, schooling, and the limited freedoms of being a "minor" in our society. They overcompensate in search for complete freedom, interpret anarchy as the ultimate expression of that, and resent what reminds them of restrictions: government.
I agree there's a ... ( 2 months ago by robag88)
I agree there's a strong appeal to that audience level, but I also don't think we can pass off it's messages as teen-rebellion nonsense. The film is raising important issues for ppl of all ages.
But I wonder how ... ( 2 months ago by Symphonitron)
But I wonder how important? Mistrust of a democratically elected government seems a paranoid preoccupation. In modern times I have seen a growing number of people well into adulthood who continue to find any authority, or their interpretation of authority, a threat to freedom. The Wachowski's have the notion that government should "fear" its people. My response is, why should fear have any role in the equation by any side? Isn't fear the real enemy, and the manipulation of fear the real problem?
Yes I agree there ... ( 2 months ago by robag88)
Yes I agree there is a great deal of paranoia and defiance of authority, but I think it's been brought on by government and corporate corruption being exposed time and time again. With the track records of lying that our governments have its very difficult to take anything they say at face value. It seems the Wachowski's feel the same way.

I thought this ... ( 1 month ago by Tripp393)
I thought this movie sucked. I'm a big scifi fan and i thought the kung fu was completely out of place. All this knowledge and they're stll limited to fighting with kicks, punches, and guns? They introduce such a great concept and then degrade it by USING scifi simply to do something else. I saw Dark City after this and thought it was a much better film(although it still doesn't delve deep enough into its concept). I believe this is the 1st account i have of a scifi-sell-out
That pretty much ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
That pretty much sums up my opinion of the film a few years ago. I think it succeeds on both the commercial and intellectual level. Morpheus says in the movie that they don't try to wake ppl up beyond a certain age - I think the Wachowski's mirrored that by targeting a younger audience with the film itself.
HA! what, 6 year ... ( 1 month ago by Tripp393)
HA! what, 6 year olds? I saw this when i was around 13. I was just used to scifi films that took a head dive into science without hindrance. I mean i absolutely loved boxing and karate films(you know there was a shitload back in the day). Just don't squash them altogether. I've figured out now that "squashing together" is what hollywood thinks is the money-making formula. What did you think of dark city?
Lol. Targeting six ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
Lol. Targeting six yr olds isn't such a bad idea. Have you watched Wall E yet? Great movie on many levels.
Haven't seen Dark City, but it's been recommended to me a few times so am on the look out for a copy.
I generally dislike the squashing together formula - very difficult to keep a story credible when it tries to be everything to everyone at once.
Wall-E was damn ... ( 1 month ago by Tripp393)
Wall-E was damn good. It's the 1st honest portrayal of love that I've ever seen.

Rob,The movie review is just fantastic!!Computer Paranoia is definitely happening now...Most of us are hooked up to the computer for so many hours a day. like 6-7 hours at least. I wish that day comes when we do not have to search for a news paper to read..when all the information needed will just be streaming into our minds..wow!! that will be great.
The more I watch and understand the movie Matrix..It inspires a lots of possibilities..So much strength and Courage and mainly FREEDOM!
Thank You

Anyone seen The Second Renaissance anime short? that also has parallels & historic references to it also, they had references on the holocaust, the protester that got in the way of the tanks in tienanmen square, million man march (million machine march), the great depression etc, but in a man vs machine aspect. It looked pretty surreal i thought it was a depiction of how earth would be centuries from now, like it's a warning

I don't consider it a classic, but from a political point of view it makes some bold statements worthy of a review.

As always Rob great anyalisis. Your point about how this movie becomes more relevant as time goes on and not less are dead on. I was just wondering do are you a teacher is this something you do in your spare time? Well keep up the great work. Cant wait for the No Country for Old Men reveiw. I liked that movie because the bad guy wins and not the old time sherif in the white hat which is much more realistic in the world we live in today. Thank you for your time.
