No the recon email was a plot device in the movie to make the episode good and hilarious. Bungie often posts videos of Machinima on their home page so they obviously have watched Digital Ph33r's amazing work and once they saw this episode they felt they should give him recon as a gift b/c it was used as a plot device in episode, not b/c of the email but b/c they liked his prior work too and felt he was deserving of it.
