When You Put It ... ( 8 months ago by JollyPollyDolly1)
When You Put It That Way I Totally Support Garfunkel, But It Doesn't Stop Me Loving Paul. I Wish I Wasn't So Shallow And Could Support The Not-So-Handsome One But That Isn't Me.
It's Been Great Talking To You! Thanks For Your Insight.

This song has strains from it that remind me of the choruses in Bach's St. Matthew's Passion...same chord progression and harmonic structure.

well paul simon directly adopted the theme from the song "mein gmüt ist mir verwirret" just as bach did in his matthews passion ;) so they have the same source

Paul has also utilized it quite well - Wow!!

All thanks to skymods3 for posting this lovely version of a gripping song. Can't say anything about the Japanese translation. But they sing at the end "you can't be forever blessed". It makes a huge difference to suggest they're singing "you can be ..."!
By the way, does anyone know if this song was revived much in 2003 when America invaded Iraq??

I'm pretty sure the original lyric was meant to be "You can't be forever blessed" which is fitting with the tone of the song overall...and also is a slam in the face to those people like GW that think we can do whatever we want because we are America and we are a Christian nation. This song is a true masterpiece and I think it deserves to be recognized as a national anthem for the USA.

kydavid2, as far as I recall, song had no revival in 2003 due to american "intervention" cough, cough in iraq. However, right after 09/11/2001 with wtc collapse, the lyrics in the bridge - "I dreamed I was dying, statue of liberty, dreamed I was flying, etc" seemed to be somewhat suggestive of people dying in the wtc Ironically, less radio play because many songs that mentioned flying (fire and rain for ex.) and disasters -(1941 mining disaster , bee gees ) were unofficially banned for awhile

Interesting. People read what they want to think into lyrics, I guess. I remember assuming at the time that the SoL was "sailing away to sea" in disgust over the war in Vietnam - a bit like "catching the last train for the coast". I wonder what it would take for this song to be revived successfully. Nobody could get away with looking/acting like that in front of a camera any more. But are there any such sublime voices out there these days?

I hope someone reads this and shares with me a special moment that I see in this video. I have loved this song for years, and this is truly the best version I have ever heard. I am extremely moved by the looks on their faces at the end. It appears to me that they are both choking up, and could barely hold it together to finish. In no way comparing myself to them, I have had this happen to me during performences when the sheer beauty of the music overwhelmed me. Did anyone else catch this?
