2008 Fuel Economy Comparison: Prius v Jetta v Focus v Smart

These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now!
We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter "TDI" diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

I agree on everything you said except mazda's beeing less reliable than fords, I know fords are very reliable and good cars in general, but so is mazda, and its beeing owned by ford so they share lots of parts, ford have used lots of mazda designed engines during their ownership of mazda and mazda has used lots of fords

Why do you say that? Mazda is japanese and like almost all japanese cars its cars should be, and as far as ive known, are reliable. I own a mazda myself and Ive never had a problem with it, though it is 10 years old and has 110k on it.

no. Subary, Honda, Toyota and somewhat Nissan are reliable. Mazda and Mitsubishi are not. I knew 1 lady whose mazda died at 120k miles. Mazda's arent bad, but u can buy a better car with same money when buying brand new.

maybe, but mazda 6 really is a good car and the old mazda 6 scored in first place in a reliabilty survey in germany, scoring better than toyota and honda, so i think the new cars from them definitely are reliable.
But would have thought the old cars were to, though most mazdas are built in usa but not japan, and I think that could be one reason for usa mazdas mabe being less reliable than those in europe that Im used to.I know one model of mazda used a ford tranny which broke down all the time.

why was a focus in this test thats stupid. the cobalt xfe even would have been better than focus. of coure my 1991 jetta 1.6 deisel swap with overdrive trans would have wooped them all on highway mileage

The reason the USA Mazdas were bad was because their engine were built in a ford factory for a long time. This was because of fords influential stock holding in the Mazda Motor Corporation earning them the contract. Not even Mazdas designs could be reliable when they were made by ford

Yeah, it is pretty sad really. None of these cars except the prius even begin to approach the gas mileage of those old VW's or an old Honda crx. Are we like taking steps backwards or something?

my 1995 metro gets 49 mpg with regular gas. The prius has a huge carbon footprint when you account for manufacturing lithium batteries.
