saskabush, I agree with you in that rock n' roll was done before Elvis, but rockabilly was never performed, at least at the beginning, by Bill Haley. If anything, Haley was more influenced by swing/big band. None of his stuff sounds like Rockabilly.
The sound of Rockabilly came with Elvis. HOwever, the edges are blurry. To me rockabilly is country music with an edge, and died out after say 1957.
Most early rock with country roots sounded little like rockabily, both musically and/or lyrically.

I've been Rockin since day 1 and say F**k 'em all - do whats in the heart, Scr**w the 50s, its the rockin' that counts, keep it fresh, alive. Rock n Roll WILL never die.

Hey guys, play fair. Chuck Berry is technically rock n roll, but Rockabilly is a feeling and Chuck had the feeling. Elvis, Carl, Jerry Lee, Sir Cash - all of em were country, rock n roll, but they were all ROCKABILLY. It;s a feeling man!

Some of the most definitive rockabilly came from Elvis and his sessions at Sun Records from 1954-1955. Also Carl Perkins. Johnny Burnette rock & roll trio did some of the wildest stuff with Paul Burlison on guitar. Rockabilly has a defintive style with a percussive effect on the upright bass. What makes rockabilly so special is the fact that it cannot be played around with. It is true to it's roots today as it was back then.

Preach it, brother! Some of the earliest rockabilly tunes didn't have drums because that bass effect sounded almost like a drum. How cool is that?
